Final Project (Individual)
Mangrove Observation Center
A space for observing, resting, discussing etc, the Mangrove Wildlife Observation Unit must correspond to the immediate site context to make it unique to its landscape and activity. The design demonstrates design intentions with the application of architectural principles, materiality and constructability within the site context, thus creating a memorable spatial experiences for the user.

Rethinking Our Relationship With Nature
Nestled in a damaged area at the edge of the Kuala Selangor Mangrove Swamp, The Wildlife Observation Unit is designed to rethink our relationship with nature as human beings.
The structure forces us to review our perspective of nature by creating an interdependency between us and nature. It attempts to redefine the built environment by not just intergrating but also incorporating nature as a fundamental base of the structure that in return heals and protects the environment it is built in.

Site Issues: Erosion Due to Storm Surges
Located at the mouth of the Selangor River, the site is prone to soil erosion due to the tidal and storm surges especially at the end of the year, resulting in the site being littered full of fallen trees and debris. The damage is detrimental to the site as the reduced number of healthy mangrove trees increases the rate of soil erosion which in return makes the mangrove trees more prone to damage by storm and tidal surges.

Solution:
Mangrove Pod Structural Base
The mangrove pods act as the main structural base and will increase in strength as the mangrove trees grow due to the roots capturing sediment and anchoring the wildlife observation unit into the soft mangrove ground. The pods also act as a first line of defense for the mangrove forest and will reduce soil erosion by reducing the force of surges and strengthening the soil.
