CONCEPT

This project was part of the Intercultural Design Module where students had the chance to visit Japan to study on Japanese Mythology and how it affects the modern society in Japan. Following the study trip, students had to design a product based on their research.

We initially believed that due to the Kami structure in Japanese mythology , the rigid structure and order of things was the reason why the Japanese were using subcultures as a form of rebellion. However, after through research we found out that the interesting subcultures of modern day Japan were mostly born purely based off personal interest and as a form of self expression.

Thus we came up with ROK-KYU, a streetwear brand that not only strives to revive the vintage fashion of the Tokyo Rockabillies, but also embraces modern forms of self expression and Malaysian culture to produce a truly unique identity.
