Project One (Individual)
Covid-19 Pandemic Spatial Translation
Project 1 is an introductory project by which you are required to explore issues of spatial typologies and poetics through simple design exercises. This is an individual project, you are to propose ONE schemes of Spatial Translations themed ‘Journey of the five senses’.
You are required to design in the form of semi-open architecture by using two contrasting spatial types of your choice. There is no specific site for this design work. The story of your spatial translation should translate into a narrative, and it should be informed by precedents studies.
Project Brief
Covid-19 Pandemic Spatial Translation

Into the Unknown
Plain and normal at glance, probably like the common cold they said, the vaccine will be ready soon they said.
Faced with an unknown situation, we all confronted it differently, most of us took the first path and dwelled on the uncertainty of not knowing what to do, with some choosing to take the second path, braving head first to face the problem, resulting in a steep but shorter route, whereas some took the third path, choosing to ignore the signs, giving themselves false hope only to plummet down .
No matter what path we took, the deeper we explored, the more we realized that hidden under the mask of false certainty was the unknown, beneath the calm was the ensuing chaos, hiding inside was a monster manifesting taking over our lives

Engulfed in Fear
As we enter the unknown, The resonating sounds of footsteps on the drumlike membranes signal us of people as we peek through the openings to get glimpses. We can see and hear each other, but we cannot truly connect as the monster pulls us apart, dragging us down into the darkness. The darkness paired with the volume of water at the base engulfs us in a cold isolation. The overwhelming loneliness induces the panic and hysteria that unknowingly ripples through the web of structures to others, making their path tougher as well.

The Journey Back Up
Dark lonely and afraid, the glimmer of warmth and light peeks through as we realise we’re not alone in this pandemonium. The sudden serenity amongst the desolation makes us realise that together we can escape if we start fighting it not by fear but by a calm open mind together. Patiently we manouver through the ladybrinth of emotions as it finally open up to the outside. We escaped the monster, but was the monster actually us all along?
